Dominoes Classic Duel is the traditional game played straight: a full set of 28 double-six bones, seven dealt to each player, the rest face down in the boneyard. Whoever holds the double six opens, and from there you take turns extending the chain by matching the dot counts on the open ends.

You can play out a match against the computer or take on a live opponent online. It is unhurried and completely silent, which — along with the fact that a round fits inside a short break — makes it one of the more study-hall-friendly things on the site.

How to play

Click a bone in your hand and place it against a matching open end of the chain. If nothing in your hand fits, draw from the boneyard until it does. Play out your hand before your opponent does, or block the board so that neither of you can move and the lower remaining pip count wins.

• Get rid of your doubles early; they are the hardest bones to place late in a hand.

Dominoes Classic Duel strategy guide

A standard set is 28 bones, and you start with seven. Each domino is split into two halves showing between zero and six dots. Seven are dealt to each player and the rest go face-down in the boneyard, which the game calls the market. Whoever holds the double six opens; from there you click a bone in your hand and place it against a matching open end of the chain.

If you cannot go, you draw until you can. That is the rule that makes the game tactical rather than random, because every bone you are forced to draw is information your opponent gets for free. Watching how many times they go to the market tells you which numbers they are missing, and that is worth more than any single high-scoring placement.

Play the suit your opponent cannot. Once you have noticed that they had to draw when a four was open, keeping fours available is how you keep them drawing. Conversely, if you hold five bones with a three on them, opening the chain up to threes repeatedly is playing straight into your own hand and away from theirs.

Get rid of your heavy bones early. A blocked board is scored on the pips left in hand, so a six-five sitting unplayed at the end is an expensive piece of furniture. When two placements are equally good positionally, play the heavier one. The same logic applies in reverse near the end, when holding a light bone is a safety net.

Blocking is a win condition, not a stalemate. If you cannot empty your hand first, closing both ends of the chain to numbers nobody holds ends the game on pip count — and that is a game you can win from behind. Against the AI it is a reliable route to victory; against a human opponent in multiplayer it is the move they will not see coming until it has already happened.
