Beach Volleyball is the straightforward version of the sport: two players, one net, a ball that must not touch the sand on your side. Rallies are short, the serve matters, and the whole thing is decided by whether you can read where the ball is coming down faster than the person sitting next to you.

It rounds out the volleyball corner of this site alongside Volley Random and Volley Lama, and it is the most conventional of the three — the one to play when you want the actual sport rather than a physics joke.

How to play

Player 1 plays on WASD, Player 2 on the arrow keys. Move under the ball and jump to send it back over the net; if it lands on your side, your opponent scores. Touch controls work on phones and tablets.

Tips to win

• Get under the ball early and stop moving — jumping while drifting sends it out of bounds.
• Aim your returns deep toward the back line; short balls are easy to attack.
• Serve wide rather than hard — angle causes far more mistakes than speed.

Beach Volleyball strategy guide

WASD against the arrow keys. Player 1 plays on WASD, Player 2 on the arrow keys, and touch controls work on phones and tablets. There is also a Player vs CPU option if there is nobody next to you, so the game covers both the one-person and two-person cases without changing how it plays.

Keep the ball off your own sand. That is the entire rule. Move under the ball and send it back over the net; if it lands on your side, your opponent scores. Rallies are short, which puts an unusual amount of weight on the serve and on the first return.

Get under the ball and stop moving. Jumping while you are still drifting sends the ball out of bounds, and drifting is the natural state of a player who read the bounce a fraction late. Arrive early and plant. Being in position two beats before the ball arrives is worth more than any amount of reaction speed once it does.

Return deep. A short ball near the net is the easiest thing in the game to attack, and it hands the rally straight back. Aiming toward the back line forces your opponent to move backwards, which is the slowest direction to cover and the hardest one to hit from. Depth beats power in almost every exchange here.

Serve wide, not hard. Angle causes far more mistakes than speed does. A hard flat serve is often just a fast ball arriving where your opponent already is; a wide one makes them move before they can set. It is the most conventional of the volleyball games on this site — Volley Random and Volley Lama are the physics-joke versions — so if you want the actual sport, this is the one to open.
