2D Car Racing is retro top-down racing with a weapon rack: nitro for straights, plus maces and missiles you pick up on the track and fire at whoever is ahead. Coins from each race unlock new cars, which is the progression, but the reason to keep it open is the two-player mode.

Because the camera sees the whole track, neither player can hide, and power-ups turn a comfortable lead into a coin flip. That makes it a better shared-keyboard racer than most — the person in front is never safe, so nobody stops paying attention.

How to play

Player 1 drives with WASD and fires power-ups with T. Player 2 drives with the arrow keys and fires with P. Collect power-ups from the track as you pass over them, then spend race winnings on new cars in the garage.

Tips to win

• Hold nitro for the longest straight, not the first one you reach.
• Fire weapons on a straight — a shot taken mid-corner almost always misses.
• Second place is the best place to be on the last lap. Let the leader eat the power-ups first.

2D Car Racing strategy guide

Two drivers, one keyboard. Player 1 drives with W, A, S and D and fires power-ups with T. Player 2 drives with the arrow keys and fires with P. Both sit at the same keyboard, and the top-down camera shows the whole track, so each of you can always see exactly where the other car is.

Power-ups decide races. Nitrous boosts, maces, missiles and more power-ups are waiting on the track. Drive over one to pick it up, then press your fire key to use it. Nitro gains you ground on a straight; maces and missiles are for whoever is in your way. Because every pickup can change the order, a lead is never safe until the finish.

Coins and cars. Races pay out coins, and with enough of them you can buy new cars. That gives the game a reason to keep going beyond a single rematch: race well, save up, and pick a different car when you can afford one.

Mistakes that cost races. Firing a weapon the moment you pick it up is the usual one; shots fired while cornering tend to miss. Burning nitro on the first short straight is another, because the car often reaches the next bend at a speed it cannot hold. And fighting the other player for the racing line through every turn slows you both down.

How to improve. Learn where the long straights are and use nitro there. Line up weapon shots when both cars are travelling in the same direction. On the final lap, sitting just behind the leader can be stronger than leading, because you get to use your power-up after theirs is spent. After a few races, swap key sets so both players learn both sides of the keyboard.
