Newpong is a revamped version of classic Pong. The core is untouched — two paddles, one ball, do not let it past you — but it adds an optional power-up mode for single-player and local games, and it can be played split-screen by two people on one machine, online with a friend, or solo against the computer.

It is about as quiet and low-stakes as a two-player game gets, which makes it a reasonable pick for a shared laptop where a loud game would be a problem. If you want the same simplicity with a sports skin, Neon Ping Pong is next door.

How to play

In local two-player, the red paddle uses W and S and the blue paddle uses the up and down arrow keys. Single player uses W and S against the computer, and online play lets you choose either W and S or the arrow keys. Power-ups can be switched on for single-player and local games; leave them off for classic Pong.

Tips to win

Newpong is classic Pong, so the fundamentals decide every game. Each side controls a paddle that moves up and down, and the aim is to return the ball and never let it past you. In local multiplayer the red paddle uses W and S while the blue paddle uses the up and down arrows; single player uses W and S against the computer.

Return to the centre after every hit. The most common way to lose a rally is to stay at the edge where you just made a return, leaving the rest of your side open. Drifting back toward the middle keeps every possible return within a short move, so you are never stretching for a ball at the far end.

Read the ball's direction early, not its position. By the time the ball is close to your paddle it is too late to cover a long distance. Read which way it is travelling as it leaves your opponent's paddle and start moving immediately; small, early moves are more reliable than a last-second dash.

Learn the classic game before switching on power-ups. Single-player and local multiplayer can both be played with power-ups, which make rallies less predictable. Play a few matches without them first so you understand the normal pace of the ball, then turn them on when you want more chaos. With power-ups active, staying centred matters even more, since you cannot plan as far ahead.

Pick the mode that fits your setup. Split-screen local play works for two people sharing one machine, the online mode lets you play with a friend, and single player puts you against the computer. In online play the game lets you choose W and S or the arrow keys, so use whichever feels natural and keep your wrist relaxed through long rallies.
