About Super Onion Boy

Super Onion Boy is a retro platformer with a simple, classic mission: a terrible monster has imprisoned the princess in a magic bubble, and it is up to you to save her. Run and jump through the levels, defeat the monsters in your way, dodge obstacles and keep going until you reach the final boss.

The controls are old-school — arrow keys to move, Z to jump and X to fire — which makes it a good pick if you want a straightforward platformer between longer games.

Super Onion Boy strategy guide

This is a platformer with a fire button, and most mistakes come from forgetting the second half. Super Onion Boy gives you the arrow keys to move, Z to jump and X to fire. New players often treat it as a pure jumping game and try to leap past every monster. Clearing a threat with X before you commit to a jump is usually safer than trying to squeeze past it in mid-air.

Monsters and obstacles are different problems. The game asks you to defeat the monsters along the way and to dodge the obstacles. Monsters can be fired at; obstacles have to be avoided. Before you move into a new section, take a moment to sort what is in front of you into those two groups, then deal with each in the right way.

Do not rush the jumps. Z is your only way over gaps and obstacles, so a jump pressed a moment too early or too late is the most common way to get hurt. When you reach a tricky stretch, slow down, line yourself up, and jump with intent rather than holding the arrow key and hoping.

Use P deliberately. The pause menu is not just for interruptions. If a section has caught you out more than once, pausing gives you a moment to think about what went wrong instead of throwing yourself straight back in at the same speed.

Save something for the end. Everything in the game builds toward the final boss, the monster keeping the princess trapped in the magic bubble. Treat the levels before it as practice for moving and firing at the same time, because that is exactly what the boss fight will ask of you.
